The History of RedPalazzo

A Story of Tradition and Renewal

Originally known as Palazzo Di Stefano, RedPalazzo’s origins are tied to the construction of the Abbey of Fossanova by the Cistercians in the 12th century. Initially used as a stable for horses, the Palazzo took shape in the 15th century with the arrival of the Cardinal Commendatory. Between the 1500s and 1800s, the second and third floors were added, transforming the building into the residence of the Cardinal Commendatories of the Abbey.

From the Borghese to Today

Transformations and Changes of Ownership

Over the centuries, the ownership of the Palazzo passed through various noble families, including the Borghese, who adorned it with extraordinary frescoes and its characteristic red color.

After enriching the Borgo and the Palazzo with frescoes that are still visible today, the Borghese, due to a series of circumstances, left the Borgo, leaving the Palazzo as an inheritance to other families.

Michelangelo di Stefano

Michelangelo Di Stefano and the Reclamation of the Pontine Marshes

Michelangelo Di Stefano, who arrived from Abruzzo to trade timber, purchased the Mazzocchio Estate and began the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes between 1926 and 1937.

He oversaw the construction of over 80 km of drainage ditches to remove stagnant waters, thus acquiring ownership of the Borgo of Fossanova and the surrounding lands.

From Father to Son

Inheritance and Division of the Palazzo

After Michelangelo’s death, his son Pasquale continued his father’s work. Later, Pasquale’s three daughters—Emanuela, Paola, and Costanza—divided the Palazzo into three parts.

Emanuela, owner of RedPalazzo, has played a key role in the preservation of the Borgo of Fossanova. Her dedication to buffalo farming and her commitment to preserving the historic character of the site have helped maintain the essence of the Borgo.

Thanks to her efforts, Fossanova continues to reflect its rich cultural and architectural heritage, attracting visitors and supporting the local community. Her vision serves as an example of how respect for tradition and passion for the land can go hand in hand with sustainable development.
